Technology has become a part of our lives. It’s no longer a luxury, but a necessity. You would no sooner leave the house without your phone than you would without brushing your teeth. Now the narrative isn’t about specific technology, rather the way it can add to our lifestyle.
For example, let’s say friends are coming to your home for a dinner party. You’ll pop the cork on nice bottle of Merlot, and have some music on in background. Rather than having the typical speaker hanging from the wall or sitting on the table, now you can have a sleek, sexy speaker that looks like a glass with a flickering candle in it. Instead of thinking about all the technical aspects of this speaker, homeowners can use it to add to the ambiance of the room with a product that is beautiful and functional.
After dinner, you retire to the living room and start chatting about what you’ve all been up to. Instead of just using words to catch everyone up, you show them video of your kids, vacations, etc. All you need to do is send the pictures to a small wireless projector, and they will show up on your wall. This projector, instead of looking like a big black box, resembles an artistic piece that would be used as a centerpiece on the coffee table. It blends in so seamlessly, no one would ever know it is a projector.
I recently did a talk at Sony’s Life Space UX showroom in Manhattan, this was attended by architects, interior designers, and the media. This talk resonated with these folks from the point of painting a beautiful picture on how technology enhances your lifestyle. It’s time for manufacturers to talk about their products in a different way. Instead of talking up the technical aspects of a product, manufacturers should start to show customers why their products are such great additions to the clients homes and offices. Technology now has a Sexy, sleek, design aspect to it. It’s time to show that off.
